This article appeared in the July 1999 issue of The Colorado Lawyer.  It is the first of a two part article on effective drafting of Qualified Domestic Relations Orders ("QDROs") Part I provides an overview of ERISA and QDRO requirements, describes the basic types of pension plans, addresses the timing and execution of QDROs, and highlights the dangers of relying too much on the assistance of plan administrators.

This article appeared the September 1999 issue of  The Colorado Lawyer.  It is the second of a two part article on effective drafting of Qualified Domestic Relations Orders ("QDROs").  Part II provides some practical drafting instructions, presents elements of a well-drafted QDRO, and identifies important client rights.  In addition, it discusses some of the legal and practical issues that family lawyers should address in order to avoid malpractice claims.
